Joint Replacement

Physical therapy is an important element of recovery and rehabilitation after joint replacement surgery. Once the joint replacement has been completed, the patient will work with his surgeon and physical therapist on an individualized program of rehabilitation.

Range Of Motion - After Joint Replacement Surgery It is very important that range of motion (ROM) and strength are recovered after the joint replacement. Strength will come with time and therapy but if range of motion is not restored soon after joint replacement, scar tissue around the joint replacement will strengthen and motion will be lost.

On the first outpatient visit after joint replacement surgery, the physical therapist will perform an assessment of the patient’s level of pain, his body alignment (general posture), range of motion, strength and the status of the skin around the joint (to check for scarring and/or swelling). Once this assessment is completed, a treatment plan will be initiated. The plan will set goals for getting back to daily activities as well as estimate how many visits the physical therapist feels will be needed after your joint replacement.

The physical therapist will prescribe various exercises and therapies to help strengthen the muscles and ligaments around the joint replacement as well as reduce swelling, improve flexibility and increase range of motion, strength and endurance.
